<butt-ugly-fish>Urban Legend Zeitgeist: Gore Gaffe

Synopsis

Vice President Al Gore confused Bible passage John 3:16 with John 16:3.

See the story here.

Is it true? No.
Why?

Gore's confusion of John 3:16 ("For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life") with John 16:3 ("And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.") supposedly shows that Gore's faith is not as profound as he claims.

No details of when or where Gore made the slip are given.

Conservative columnist Cal Thomas notes that the quote is real, but Al Gore did not say it, President George Bush did:

Bush said it in my presence at a religious broadcasters convention about 1990, and I wrote about it in my book, Blinded by Might: Can the Religious Right Save America. But somehow it got twisted around and stuck on the Internet and put in Al Gore's mouth. He's got a lot of stuff that he has to defend, but that's not one of them.

When?June 1999
Comments

Paul Harvey used the supposed gaffe in his broadcast on July 6, 1999.
