djm8@cornell.edu passes along an oldie but a goodie: ->>Any of you Brits remember the kiddie TV show "Captain Pugwash," with ->>Seaman Stains and Master Bates? (though if I'm not mistaken, Roger the ->>Cabin Boy was apocryphal.)

Which causes chris@loncps.demon.co.uk (Christopher Salter) to doubt himself and write:
->Oh yes! The kids these days don't know what there missing! I have to ->confess I don't remember the "supporting" characters, Jo. Are you serious? ->Surely that can't be. I must have been very innnocent (along with the ->Board of the Governors of the BBC at the time)!

mcirvin@husc8.harvard.edu (Matt McIrvin) catches this and writes: -The alt.folklore.urban FAQ claims that characters with these names did -in fact *not* appear on the show, and that the rumor is due in part to -a doctored videotape.

Matt, you are correct that the story is bogus (check the _Guardian_, 13 Sep 1991 for an apology by the BBC). I have no recollection of a doctored videotape figuring in it though. Anybody else seen this allegedly doctored tape?
