Subject: AIDS cases reach 1 million, again....SPY

This is from the Feb. SPY magazine, condensed.

Oct 1, 1985: New York Times reports that "up to one million Americans" are infected with the AIDS virus, and the total may be climbing up but to 1,000-2,000 per day.

Apr 6, 1986: The Times reports that an "estimated one million people in the United States" are infected with the AIDS virus.

Aug 27, 1989: The 100,000th case of AIDS is reported. HHS Secretary Louis Sullivan writes in the Los Angeles Times that "more than one million Americans have already been infected."

June 25, 1990: Comparing the spread of AIDS in inner cities to that of Africa, Newseek notes that "an estimated 1 million Americans are infected with the virus."

June 28, 1992: The CDC offers grim predictions of the AIDS rate, and the Times reports it, adding, "the CDC estimates, very roughly, that one million Americans are infected."

At press time, a CDC spokesperson told Spy that the number of Americans infected with AIDS had reached a staggering one million.
