Whilst (whilst?) reading through _The Folktales of England_ last night I ran across the following (paraphrased) legend. See what 'cha all think...
"Young Miss M... was going on her first trip alone, and was taking the train from .... to ..... Her mother had promised her a five pound note to use for expenses along the way, and she concealed it in her travelling bag.
Later, on the train, she was assigned to a compartment with a rather shabby looking Irishwoman. Miss M... fell asleep for awhile and slept comfortably. Later she awoke to discover that her compartment-mate was now asleep. She decided to get some things from her bag, and in doing so discovered that the five pound note was missing.
Suspicious that the woman might have taken it but unwilling to confront her directly Miss M... carefully opened the woman's bag to find the note perched on top of the woman's belongings. She removed it, closed the bag, and said nothing.
Later, upon returning home, her mother asked how the trip was. She related her experiences and remarked that she'd had a fine time. Her mother said `I was worried you'd be caught short on funds,' and the daughter said `no, the five pound note was enough to get me by.'
Her mother responded with a shocked look and said `but you never picked it up...I found it on the parlor table where I left it for you!'"
Sound familiar? It was dated 1912 in the book.
