When you next see Bill in person you may wonder why his diodes are in such funny places. For the uninitiated (those of you who aren't 33rd degree radio amateurs), the Morse Code in the middle name above translates to "hi hi", which is the Morse equivalent of a smiley. It's onomatopoeic -- it's supposed to sound like someone chuckling ("hehhehhehheh hehheh").

This usage predates e-mail smileys by many decades.
