We just had a final decision (i.e. US Supreme Court) reagarding a mugger getting a big sum of money from teh State.
Details (partial): In 1984 a mugger attacked someone on a subway station here in NYC. A transit cop was actually in the area and chased the mugger. But since the bad guy was in better shape, the transit cop shot the bad guy (in the back....) and bad guy was paralyzed from neck down.
State courts here (lawsuits in NY go through the State - there aren't any municpal courts) awarded the mugger 4.5 million dollars.
Yesterday (11/29/1993) the US SUpreme Court declined to hear an appeal, so the award stands.
Afraid I don't have the articles at hand (Motto MOTTO) so I can't post the names.
btw, this money has to be used primarily as an offset for medical bills, and since a quadrapalegic will easily run up daily nursing home/hospital bills od $500-$1,000/day, the award is merely offsetting what the gov't would have to pay for his nursing care anyway (once he'd gone through his savings, he'd become a 'ward of the state' and have the gov't pick up his medical bills).
