Subject: Fish Guts
T. Some English beers contain fish guts.
A substance called isinglass, which is made of sturgeon bladders, is used as a fining agent (i.e., it makes the beer more clear) in some British beers, particularly traditional ales.
What's intriguing is that somebody, most likely by trial and error, figured out that fish guts were good for this. Or maybe somebody accidentally spilled fish guts into a vat of fermenting beer. Sounds unlikely, though.
