Leonard Tipton and Peter Yarrow, the songwriters, say they were thinking about loss of youth and innocence when they were writing it, not about drugs. The AC-47 gunship used in Vietnam and nicknamed "Puff" postdates the song.

Debunked: The song "Puff the Magic Dragon" is either about smoking pot or a Vietnam war weapon.
