For years "phone phreaking" was a way of life among the less reputable hacker community, while the mainstream has had to settle for the more pedestrian notion of just using someone else's calling card number to make long distance calls for free. One UL that features Johnny Carson again has it that he gave out his calling card number on the air to celebrate winning a large settlement against AT&T. Variations feature Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Sammy Davis Jr, Robert Redford, and Burt Reynolds.

This is just silly. There's no proof at all for any version, and this is very much a situation where the conspicuous lack of evidence is fatal to the story. Carson Productions has stated, as with many other ULs, that they cannot verify this story.
