A little old lady threatened with harm who just happens to answer the door with a red hot poker in hand is traced back to the legends of wirchcraft and telltale marks.

Debunked: Woman lighting fire opens door with a hot poker; robber at door thinks it is a gun and grabs it!

There are varients where the woman is holding a knife. Often the story continues that the robber is found out due to this injury caused and turns out to be a neighbor.
