Documented: MRI used to be called "NMR" or "NMR Imaging", with the "N" standing for "Nuclear", but the "N" was dropped due to perceived public fear.

Dr Thomas Meaney, in Radiology, vol 150 #1, Jan 1984, specifically suggested the change to the radiological community, for exactly the reason given above, public distrust of "nuclear" technologies. Jon Papai's post that documents this can be found here.
