Usually in the context of opening a coffin some time after death, it is said that the corpse's hair (and sometimes fingernails) have grown after death--at least in one case so that the entire coffin was packed with hair. At least recently, there's usually a rationale given that the cells that allow hair growth continue to live for some long period after the body dies. While it's true that some cells survive the body's death, few if any last as long as 24 hours. However, as the corpse dehydrates and the skin around the nails shrinks, nails may appear to be longer. |
