ACHOO Syndrome

Documented: Some people sneeze when exposed to bright light ("photic sneeze effect").

Some 20% of the population sneezes when exposed to sudden, bright light; the condition is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. It may be because spillover between adjacent nerves (eye stimulation leading to nasal stiumulation) or it may be because squinting makes tears flow into the nasal cavity. The photic sneeze effect has been christened "ACHOO Syndrome" - Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst Syndrome. Reference: Sneezing response to bright light. Is it a cause of accidents? N. Deshmukh The Guthrie Journal, 64(3):104-105 (1995)
