Salmonella enteritidis contaminates eggs at a relatively high rate; Salmonellosis (always unpleasant, and sometimes fatal) due to raw eggs seems to have peaked around 1996, but remains an intermittent problem in the USA and other coutries. (Reference: Outbreaks of Salmonella serotype enteritidis infection associated with eating raw or undercooked shell eggs--United States, 1996-1998. MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2000 Feb 4;49(4):73-9) Chicken is less commonly a problem perhaps because it's less often eaten raw, but Salmonellosis has been associated with chicken products fairly regularly. |
