GANG RUMOR SPURS ALERT

Houston police and Harris County deputies were put on alert for the weekend after reports that local gangs planned to drive with their headlights off - and shoot anyone who warned them about it.

Sgt. W.K.Elam of the Houston Police Department's westside sub-station said officers were warned at roll call Friday that the stunt was an initiation rite.

Elam said police were warned by other police departments and concerned citizens. "Everybody knew about it", he said.

There were no reported incidents Friday night.

Radio dispatchers broadcast several warnings to officers Saturday night, saying that Southwest Cholos and other gangs were prepared to fire at anyone, "including police officers".
