Given the recent flap about the AFU emoticon ban, the following might be relevant. In the 1993 Spy 100 ("A list of the worst people, places, and things of the year"), emoticons made the list at #78. This was high enough to beat out Dan Rather (#79), 'transvestite chic' (#83), Germany (#98) and Madonna (#100). Just in case anyone cares.
