It finally happened.
At about 7:00 on 27 December, 1993 the first AFU East/West Summit meeting was held at Grendel's Restaurant in Cambridge, MA (just down the street from my office). In attendence were:
Dick "Guinness for me, thanks" Joltes
Phil "I'll have the pale ale" Gustafson
Kris "just an iced tea, please" Hugya (my wife, who's used to AFU by now).
Initially the meeting was to have taken place at the local Border Cafe', but the crowd was too large and the heathens told us the wait would be 45 minutes or more (even when we presented our AFU credentials) so we moved to Grendels, where the beer is better anyway.
Topics of discussion included:
The evolution of AFU, where we came from and where we're going, etc. We decided that trolling is fun but rapidly becoming passe', and that it's a Good Thing that Ray's axe has been laid to rest (though it was fun while it lasted).
The "Lights Out" UL and how it developed, along with the media coverage (e.g. "it's all the fault of these computer guys!") that it received.
The best establishments for the purchase and consumption of fermented beverages made of hops, barley, and other grains. Notes were taken.
Plans for the Terry Old Hat Cabal's takeover of UseNet (oops, wasn't supposed to include this bit...ignore that).
What It Was Like to live through the last California earthquake (as narrated by Phil).
Rehashing of various ULs, including "The Superglued Penis." Kris maintains that this actually happened in Johnstown some years back, and named a local doctor who "suddenly moved away from town" following the incident. She believes there was newspaper coverage of some sort and promised to unearth it when she heads back to school next week. Phil & I were dubious but decided to withhold much comment since Kris was wielding a rather sharp knife at the time.
And lastly, "who is this Vicki person and how did she manage to take over AFU while we weren't lookin'?" My wife, of course, interjected a rousing "Vicki who?" as she glared menacingly in my direction, so the topic was quickly changed to "how 'bout them Packers?"
Dutifully recorded, this 4th day of January, 1994 (5 A.S. (Annos Shergoldus) on the AFU calendar.
Did I miss anything, Phil?
