SECTION: LIFE; Pg. C3

HEADLINE: SHORT TAKES ;
CYBER-ALLEY

BODY:

Urban legends -- stuff like the story about a fried rat being served up in a bucket of fast-food chicken -- are fodder for a news group on the Internet.

Along with such stories, this news group brings you often in-depth debunking.

For example, recently there was a well-thought-out discussion on the serious issue of whether attempting to swallow a pill without water could result in a hole being burned through your throat. A storm of posts on the theory included medical students talking about various ways the body absorbs

All the while, there's a thread of humor in the messages.

To check out the urban legends, you'll need news-group access to the Internet. You can find it at:

(but I guess you already knew that).
