Subject: How to understand AFU

This is a short introduction to alt.folklore.urban (AFU). There are much more complete sources of information, including the FAQ, archived at http://tafkac.org/afu.faq/

AFU's main purpose is the discussion, analysis, and debunking of urban legends. An offshoot is the analysis of some topics which might best be described as trivia or interesting information. While these are generally accepted, they are peripheral to the group's purpose.

AFU standards for analysis and debunking are high. If you wish to support or contest a story, your opinion is emphatically not enough; we want checkable references and sources.

There are some types of threads which appear regularly, but which are definitely outside the scope of AFU. Most regular readers of AFU do not read or contribute to them. These include lists such as "funniest xxx" or "favourite xxx". Because they take up bandwidth without being of much interest, regular readers of AFU would like to see them disappear from the group.

It is a very good idea to read the FAQ* and guides** - especially the AFU survival guide*** - before posting anything to AFU. The group has been around for quite a while, and many of the regulars are highly protective of it. Follow the archived guidelines, and you'll be welcomed onto the group. If not, you may be made to feel most unwelcome. If you have any further questions about the group or this document, please send me e-mail.
